Strength training should not be confused with weight lifting or body building: these are sports rather than a form of exercise.
Strength training provides significant benefits to improvement in overall health and well being and is an essential ingredient in any personal fitness or wellness program. By gradually increasing weight or resistance, muscles and muscle groups are targeted and strengthened. The benefits of strength training are many and include increased bone mass, strengthening of muscles, tendons and ligaments, improved cardiac function, elevation of good cholesterol, and improved joint function.
Strength training can be performed by using free weights, elastic or spring resistance devices, or specially designed strength training mechanical or electronic equipment.
