Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates and started during the First World War. As a German national in England at the outbreak of the war, he was interned as an "enemy alien" along with many fellow Germans. He used the time to develop his ideas and exercise techniques, rigging springs to beds to allow his bedridden comrades to exercise.
After some time after the war in Germany, Joe arrived in New York in 1929 and opened a fitness studio, focusing on providing fitness training to dancers. His techniques slowly gained popularity and recognition and now his name is a household word.
Pilates and Core Strength
The body's core muscles are the foundation or building block upon which all other muscles and movement depend. These core muscles lie deep within the torso and attach to the spine and pelvis, stabilizing the spine, shoulders and pelvis, forming a solid foundation upon which everything else can be built. Core strength training also improves postural imbalances and functional fitness: both important to our daily lives and performance of day to day tasks.
Rather than focusing on individual muscles or muscle groups, core strength training involves exercising all the core muscles at once. This is achieved using various techniques, including abdominal bracing, Pilates, and yoga.
Pilates focuses mainly on cultivating core strength in the body and lengthening the spine. Pilates has become popular in recent years for its largely aesthetic body sculpting effect. Pilates can be a valuable tool for enhancing strength, definition, and good posture.
