8 Simple Rules for Healthy Eating

  1. Go Green – have 10 servings of raw or steamed fruits and vegetables per day. (Trick – Try a “green superfood” supplement if you are not able to eat enough servings.)
  2. Avoid White – breads, pastas, sugars and rice. Instead, choose brown rice, honey, whole grains.
  3. Change your oil – choose good oils such as olive, flax and canola. Avoid vegetable fats, butter and whole milk products.
  4. Know portion size – meats: 3 – 4 ounces, vegetables and fruits 1 cup, grains and cereals: ½ cup.
  5. Spread your calories over the entire day, beginning with a good breakfast and ending with a light supper.
  6. Pair small portions of lean protein such as nuts or lean meat with carbohydrates at each meal or snack to keep blood sugar levels constant.
  7. Know your toxic foods. Based on your upbringing, body type and food allergies, your body may not be able to assimilate the nutrients from certain foods, which may lead to storage of “toxic” fats. Keeping a food diary with your reactions to certain foods may help.
  8. Keep your metabolism pumping efficiently by getting enough exercise and sleep, and by using stress-reduction techniques.
